HEAVILY CARVED BOXED MAH JONG Circa 1920s
Made in Chine for the European export mearket this set measures 9.5" (24cms) x 10" (25cms) x 7" (18 cms) to the top of the ornately carved handle. The box is heavily carved on every facia except the back with scenes of master and pupil in dialogue amongst the native flora and fauna of China. Probably rosewood (visible on the inside) the case has been stained black. By pressing the bottom of the front panel the lid drops down to reveal the five drawers containing the tiles and accessories The quality large tiles, measuring 1.25" x 0.75" x 0.5 " are two thirds bone to bamboo and beautifully decorated and the set is complete with the four blank spares along with the the circular bone winds case and dice. It also has a rule book. Because of the high proportion of bone in the tiles and the carved wooden case, the total weight is just under 10.75 lbs - 5 kilos - Heavy!
