VR & NEILD DUTY STAMPED BONE DI
An official VR duty-stamped bone di, measuring 12cms square. One of a pair stamped on the one side by the maker Neild and with one half of the puncheon mark (which would have been punched over the pair) '£1' being the official duty paid. Governments have always taken their cut from gambline. These official duty stamps on gaming items ceased during the early part of Queen Victoria's reign. Consequently there are fewer of these than the various GR stamped di and dice. Althought the V of the script is unclear, reference material clearly shows the three differnt VR marks, but the slants of the loops indicates it is the first of the three illustrated.
