MOP-INLAID & BRASS BOUND MAH-JONG, BONE & BAMBOO TILES C. 1920
This 1920s Chinese boxed mah-jong set was made in China for the European export market. It is decorated with ornate brass decoration to the corners and to the top where there are two ornate brass carrying handles.
The Front panel, which is the lift-out lid is inlaid with mother-of-pearl in a foliate design with a mythical bird.
The bone and bamboo tiles (one quarter bone to three-quarters bamboo) are contained in two drawers (and not five as in some examples) The top drawer contains the four spare tiles, circular bone winds indicator box and a large quantity of tally sticks.
The bottom, larger drawer contains four layers of the different suites. The complete 148 tiles are all matching and original. The bone used was of an inconsistent tone and so the tiles are variously cream/creamy yellow. Many different kinds of bone were used, some very white, some creamy, some dull some shiny. A very nice, complete, authentic set.
