ANTIQUE WALNUT GAMES COMPENDIUM 1880
A superb,Walnut Games Compendium (on a mahogany carcass as was the norm) c.1880 in immaculate condition. The brass escutcheon is in tact with original key which operates a fully functioning lock.
As a piece of furniture it is beautiful and when opened the genius of Victorian design becomes fully visible. The side hinged flaps open to reveal part of the boxwood and ebony chess set which sit on brass pins and complete the full set at a glance.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a two-folding games board. The chess and backgammon are in tooled leather and, on the reverse, when fully extended there is a colourful lithographed track and rules for Steeplechase. The ebony and boxwood backgammon pieces are housed in the top tray, along with a set of bone double six dominoes, cribbage board, 6 bone dice and four bone cribbage pegs, and the painted lead horses, along with water/hedge and fence jump and the 2 boxwood shakers live at the very bottom of the box along with coloured gaming counters.
When the top tray is lifted out it reveals another lift-out tray for sets of playing cards and coloured, tooled leather scorers with brass pointers for Whist and Bezique. All pieces are complete and contemporaneous with the box, except the two full sets of playing cards which are Edwardian.
