ANTIQUE VICTORIAN OAK GAMES COMPENDIUM 1880 - COMPLETE
This wonderful honey-coloured oak games box is absolutely complete with the full compliment of original games pieces and board/s.
The box itself has no splits or cracks and the hinges are sound. It has it's original finish and a glorious patina.
When the box lid is opened the folding games board is revealed on the inside. This three-fold board allows play for chess, backgammon and the game of The Race. Ingenious, but that's the Victorians for you.
The top layer of the box has a lift-out tray (brass rings to either side) has six matching bone dice and four cribbage pegs, along with a wooden cribbage board which lifts off to reveal 28 (double-six) bone dominoes.
The middle lift-out tray contains four packs of cards; two for bezique and two for general play. The bezique cards are Victorian, the others circa 1920s. The bezique and whist markers are also original.
In the bottom of the box are two boxwood dice shakers, six painted lead horses, and one each of lead fence, hedge and water jump. Also in he bottom are the cards and dice for Bell and Hammer or Schimmel as it is sometimes known, along with a selection of coloured bone counters.
And last, but certainly not least: The double swing front doors open to reveal a full set of boxwood and ebony Staunton design chess pieces which are position on metal spikes.
A stunning piece.
