6-HORSE ASCOT RACE GAME BY JAQUES & SON LTD C 1880s
This beautiful example of the 6-horse Ascot is in yew wood box with original label. Other woods used were mahogany, oak and pine and the sizex of boxes ranged to accommodate 4 - 8 horse sets.
This set has the original bone handle, metal spindle and painted metal horses, all of which have legs, tails and string loops in tact. At time of photography a few of the horses still needed restringing, but this now done.
The Jaques family began their games business in England in 1795. Their recent Hugenot forebears had escaped France in the late 17th century when the Edict of Nantes forbade Protestantism there. Hence the English spelling Jaques and NOT Jacques - 'a' as in plates.
