VICTORIAN ROSEWOOD-CASED MOTHER OF PEARL TANGRAM PUZZLE - Circa 1860
A mid Victorian Tangram Puzzle. This example is contained in a Rosewood slide-top box measuring 4.75 cms. If you look closely at the third image you can see the method of delicate wood jointing that is an indication of the age and quality of this rich and delicate piece of treen.
The contents of the box are of course the subject matter, i.e. the Tangram. In each tangram there are two identical square's worth of cut pieces. One - the lower level here - consists of two large triangles and the upper tier of the other five. In this example the material used is mother of pearl which has an incised design of Chinese figures and scenes. So more up-market than the more normal wooden examples.
A fine example with no damage and with a patina commensurate with age.
