VINTAGE 1920s MAH-JONG - BONE AND BAMBOO TILES IN CARVED WOODEN CASE WITH CARRYING HANDLES
Complete Bone and bamboo Mah-Jong set in beautifully carved box with drop-in lid, containing five-drawers with the original metal-pull handles. Box has two metal carrying handles to the top and the carving is to the top, two sides and drop-in front lid.
I cannot tell you the name of the wood as so many different ones were used. But it is not rosewood or one or the more valuable, heavier woods. The box measures 23 x 16 x 15 high.
The tiles are made of bone and split bamboo. There are 148 tiles in all including 4 spares. There are no replacements - all are original. Each measures 30 x 22 x 11mm deep. There are a large quantity of bone tally sticks to the bottom drawer, together with a bone box containing the four wind indicators incised and painted in green, as well as a pair of chinese dice.
Please note that the flash always brings out the lighter tones in the wood, so in real light the wood is a little darker.
A beautiful set. The tiles have some weight to them, so this is a heavy object to ship. It will be well packed to ensure safe delivery.
