19th CENTURY MAHOGANY GAMES COMPENDIUM
S O L D
Beautiful honey coloured mahogany games compendium made in the 1880s. The case is in excellent condition with the normal wear to the patina.
It has a full compliment of pieces, including the all important two-fold playing board with is secured in the lid. This folds and unfolds to give a chess board, a backgammon board and when completely unfolded, the game of The Race or Steeplechase horse racing game.
Please note that all items in the box are original except for the playing cards. Also note that the dominoes under the cribbage board are made purely of bone and do not have the ebony backs that normal sets of dominoes have. These are specific to this particular type of games compendium.
The bottom of the box contains all five painted lead horses which are intact. It also has a fence, a hedge and a water jump (a mirror being used to represent the water).
As well as the pair of leather shakers, there is another game in the bottom which is called Bell and Hammer, consisting of cards, a small gavel and a number of numbered dice.
Please note from the second image, there is a small nick out of the lid edge to the left of the escutcheon.
This is an excellent example of this kind of late 19th Century compendium.
