CHINESE ANTIQUE MAH-JONG SET IN HEAVILY CARVED 5-DRAWER OAK CASE
Made in China around 1910-1920 this beautiful Mah-Jong set was made for the Chinese market, having no Arabic numerals. Measuring 19.5cm wide x 20.5 cms deep x 16.75 tall, it is made of solid oak into which has been carved ornate depictions of Chinese customs and rituals - on all four facias, including the top. The handle is carved of one solid piece of oak with a man at either end in different costumes. Unusually, this set has16 flower tiles instead of the normal eight. The brown and blue character flower tiles contain a proverb as follows: 'May you have fortune as boundless as the eastern seas. May you live as long as the Southern Mountains!' In other words, May you be blessed with a long life and great prosperity.
The extra eight tiles means there is a total of 156 tiles, including the four spare blanks. There are normally nine rows of four tiles in each drawer, but in this set each drawer accommodates seven rows of five - 35 -, so the extra tiles are contained in the top drawer with the tally sticks, wind indicator and dice/dice box and four spare blanks. The tiles are of a high quality, being three-quaters bone to one quarter dove-tailed bamboo ( as also can be seen in the pictures). They measure 30mm x 21mm x 13mm deep It weighs around 5kg.
