CALF-SKIN MINIATURE ATTACHE-CASED ANTIQUE MAH-JONG SET WITH BONE AND BAMBOO TILES
A delightful small, attache-case made of calf-skin which houses a full set of bone and bamboo MAH-JONG tiles, with a full compliment of tally sticks, wind indicators and four spare, blank tiles. The case measures 18.5 x 15 x 8cm deep. The five lift-out calf-covered trays contain 148 tiles in total. There are 36 in four trays and a spare four blank tiles in the top, along with the tally sticks and wind indicators The Flower and wind tiles are illustrated here along with the top tray. The case maker and retailer's name are stamped in gold lettering to the front lip, above the lock - ' A Barrett & Sons 63-64 Piccadilly W. Note no number eg. W1, W2 as this not brought in yet. Also their gold embossed trade label is on the inside lid and had the imperial crown which may indicate that they were suppliers to the British Royal Family. The tiles would have been purchased from China and the case made to house them. All around the 1920s.
