1930s VINTAGE MAH-JONG OF UNUSUAL DESIGN
A very unusual Mah-Jong probably manufactured in the 1930s.
The cardboard box has a lift-off lid which has a slightly faded glided design of a chinese warrior to the top, and a drop-down front which shows the five, stacked cardboard trays of tiles and counters.
There is a complete set of playing tiles of 144. Each tile is made of pressed card with an applied paper design to the top which has been clearly photographed.
The flower tiles are very interesting with both the red and green set having he same design of a sparrow flying over a sunrise/sunset, birds flying over two sunflowers, or more probably chrysanthemums, a tree in full foliage and lastly a polar bear on an ice flow with an iceberg in the distance.
Each tile measures 3.1 x 2.5 x 0.75 cms deep.
