ANTIQUE CAST IRON MECHANICAL OWL BANK
This antique cast iron "Owl Bank" - money box - was manufactured by J. and E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Conneticut, U.S.A.. This example has its original paint of green, yellow and brown in good order with no over or later painting. Complete with the original coin retainer base which is marked "PATD" Feb 1875"and Inner rim of base also stamped "PATD SEPT 21 & 28TH 1880". Coins are deposited into the body of the owl swivels the head 90 degrees. The original instructions read as follows "Place a coin on top of the branch and press the thumb piece at the back, when the head of the owl turns and the coin is deposited, after which the head moves back to its former position". A good, authentic piece of late 19th century ingenuity and frivolity using a new and popular material of the time. Height 7.5"
