1920s CHINESE MAH-JONG BONE AND BAMBOO GAME IN 3-DRAWER DOUBLE-HANDLED BOX
The boxes made to house the tiles varied enormously as can be seen by looking at the other examples on this site. This one is made of the normal orange/brown wood the majority were manufactured from, and at some stage in its life sprayed black which contrasts nicely with the brass mounts and double brass carrying handles.
There are 144 playing tiles made of bone and bamboo in the main, deep, bottom drawer which means that they stacked one on top of the other. The bone tally sticks and bone, wind indicators, which are houses in a circular black box with green Chinese character to the top, are housed in the two small upper drawers. There is one spare tile which has been placed on its side which shows a good 50/50 of bone to bamboo.
The box measures 21.x.14 x 16 cms deep. Each tile measures 3.1 x 2.1 x 1.22cms deep.
