ANTIQUE, CHINESE, MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID FIVE-DRAWER BOXED MAH-JONG WITH BRASS CARRYING HANDLES Circa 1915
The tile compliment is complete at 144 playing tiles in the four trays and four blank spares contained in the lower drawer . Each tile measures 2 x 3 x 1.35 cm deep and is made of bone (not ivory) and split bamboo. One tile has been turned on its side in the bottom tray where the generous proportion of bone to bamboo can be seen.
There is a generous amount of bone tally sticks, along with three chinese deice and an ornate ebony holder to hold the bone wind indicator discs.
There is the usual horizontal split to the back panel (due to method of construction which used the end grain the wrong way round) There is no gap, just a split. The panel stays firmly in place.
